Solar Power Output Surpasses Nuclear Generation by 20% in June 2025

23-09-2025

The global energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with renewable energy sources accelerating at a much faster pace than nuclear power, according to the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2025 presented today in Rome. The comprehensive 589-page report reveals a stark contrast between the rapid growth of renewables and the uncertain trajectory of nuclear energy, highlighting solar power's milestone achievement of surpassing nuclear electricity production by one-fifth in June 2025.

Data from the report shows renewable energy grew by 858 TWh worldwide in 2024, while nuclear power managed only a 69 TWh increase. This divergence underscores what Gianni Silvestrini, scientific director of Kyoto Club, describes as a clear "gap between the strong acceleration of renewables and the uncertain trend of nuclear power." The findings indicate that solar and wind energy, increasingly integrated with storage systems, now dominate the global electricity generation technology market.

Despite nuclear power reaching a new production record of 2,677 TWh in 2024, this growth was primarily driven by China, with production outside China declining by 14% compared to 2006 levels. Nuclear's share in the global electricity mix has fallen to 9%, the lowest level in four decades. Investment patterns further illustrate the shift, with $728 billion directed toward non-hydro renewable energy last year compared to just $21 billion for nuclear power.

The report's projections indicate rapid growth for renewables and storage systems, while nuclear power continues to search for new solutions but is expected to play a limited role until 2050. Mycle Schneider, the report's coordinator, emphasized the "worrying and growing gap between public perception and industrial reality when it comes to nuclear energy," noting that while many countries make political declarations and allocate substantial public funds, the number of states operating and building nuclear plants is actually decreasing.
