Italian Premier Responds to 'Meloni Like Kirk' Wall Message

26-09-2025

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has responded defiantly to threatening graffiti that appeared on walls at Turin's Porta Susa railway station, where her name was written inside a target cross alongside the phrase "Meloni like Kirk." The premier took to social media platform X to address what she characterized as an intimidation attempt, stating that those who live by hatred and threats "will never be like Charlie Kirk because they don't know the value of dialogue, debate, and democracy."

Meloni turned the apparent threat into a point of pride, declaring that being compared to Kirk was "a matter of honor" given that Kirk "made his life a battle for freedom of thought." She added that those who write threats on walls "will always remain prisoners of violence," while her government would "continue to walk free, strong in our ideas." The graffiti appeared during a station occupation that lasted several hours as part of a demonstration.

Messages of solidarity poured in from across the political spectrum. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara called it "a vile and intolerable act that demonstrates a growing climate of hatred that must be stopped" while confirming his "full solidarity with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni." The League party expressed similar concerns, stating that a message wishing death upon a high state official by evoking Kirk's murder "can only have one instigator: hatred."

The incident sparked partisan reactions, with Fratelli d'Italia's parliamentary group leader Galeazzo Bignami attacking "left-wing do-gooders" who claim the right fosters hatred. "Show them this shameful writing," Bignami stated on social media, adding that some "hope Giorgia Meloni meets the same fate as Charlie Kirk" and that critics "seethe with hatred and resentment because they cannot accept that Fratelli d'Italia won the elections and leads Italy." The episode highlights the tense political climate in Italy following Meloni's election victory.
