Art Police Investigate Suspected Forgeries in Traveling Dalí Exhibition

02-10-2025

Italian art police have seized 21 artworks attributed to surrealist master Salvador Dalí from an ongoing exhibition in Parma, following suspicions they may be counterfeit. The works, which include tapestries, drawings, prints and other art objects, were part of the exhibition "Dalí - Between Art and Myth" that had recently opened in the northern Italian city after previously being displayed in Rome during the first half of the year.

The investigation was triggered by concerns raised by the Fundación Gala-Salvador Dalí, the nonprofit foundation established by the artist in 1983 to promote, develop, disseminate and protect Dalí's work worldwide. The foundation alerted authorities to potential anomalies in some of the exhibited works while the show was on display in Rome, prompting the Carabinieri's cultural heritage protection unit to launch an investigation.

According to police statements, the seizure was carried out on orders from the Rome prosecutor's office after receiving the foundation's report about suspected irregularities. The same artworks had been displayed under the same exhibition title in both Rome and Parma locations, with the recent seizure occurring at the Palazzo Tarasconi in Parma where the exhibition had opened just last week.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges in authenticating works by major artists, with Dalí frequently appearing among the most forged artists alongside Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. Italian authorities emphasized that their investigation into the suspected forgeries continues as they work to determine the authenticity of the seized pieces.
