A 25-year-old woman from Forlì, Giulia Valgimigli, died on Wednesday evening after being struck by a train near the railway tracks in Pinarella di Cervia, along Via Malva Sud. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM on September 24, when Valgimigli was walking or possibly running alongside the railway embankment with a male companion, believed to be her boyfriend. Authorities have ruled out suicide, indicating the death resulted from a tragic accident.
According to police reconstructions, the train struck Valgimigli with significant force, throwing her against a fixed obstacle near the tracks. Her companion, who was at some distance from her, managed to move away in time and avoid impact. The train driver reported seeing the two young people walking near the tracks moments before the collision. Emergency services, including railway police, carabinieri, and local police, responded to the scene shortly after the incident.
The investigation is being coordinated by public prosecutor Raffaele Belvederi, with authorities still working to clarify the exact circumstances. While it appears the pair may have been using the railway path as a route home, the reason for their presence in the clearly prohibited area remains unclear. The young man who survived provided initial testimony to investigators, appearing visibly shocked following the traumatic event.
The fatal incident caused significant disruption to rail service on the Bologna-Rimini line, with suspensions between Cervia and Cesenatico lasting several hours. Train cancellations and delays of up to 100 minutes were reported before service resumed normal operations after midnight. Valgimigli's body was recovered approximately four hours after the accident, around 1:00 AM, as the community of Forlì and the Romagna Riviera mourned the sudden loss of the young woman.
