A devastating car accident in southern Italy has claimed the life of Ilaria Forgione, a 25-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant, casting a pall over the small Molise community of Montenero di Bisaccia. The tragedy occurred on Sunday, September 28, along Provincial Road 55 in the San Biase district, where Forgione was returning home from her birthday celebration. The young woman, who was expecting to give birth to a baby girl within approximately one month, died alongside her unborn child in the crash that has left the local population in shock.
The incident involved a Volkswagen Golf carrying Forgione, her partner, and a 16-year-old minor. According to preliminary reconstructions, the vehicle struck a small concrete wall that forms part of a water pipeline system, causing the car to overturn and come to rest on its right side in a grassy area. Forgione, who was seated on the impacted side of the vehicle, became trapped within the wreckage despite emergency response efforts.
Rescue teams, including firefighters, used hydraulic cutting equipment to extract Forgione from the mangled vehicle, but medical personnel from the 118 emergency service could only confirm her death at the scene. Her partner and the teenage passenger sustained injuries in the crash and were transported urgently to San Timoteo Hospital in Termoli, though neither is reported to be in life-threatening condition. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation by authorities.
In response to the tragedy, Montenero di Bisaccia Mayor Simona Contucci and the municipal administration have declared a day of community mourning to coincide with Forgione's funeral services. The mayor expressed the community's "incredulity and disturbance" at the news and extended "deepest and sincerest closeness" to the grieving family. The declaration of civic mourning, made in agreement with the Forgione family, represents a collective embrace from a community struggling to comprehend the loss of two lives under such heartbreaking circumstances.
