The Role of Urban Green in Addressing Environmental and Economic Challenges

22-05-2025

The fourth edition of the 'Libro Bianco del Verde' has brought together experts from Confagricoltura, Assoverde, Képos, and the Crea to discuss the pivotal role of urban green spaces in modern city planning. The event highlighted the need for a new urban planning approach that integrates green spaces as central elements of urban life, from balconies to parks, emphasizing their importance not just for economic reasons but for the well-being and social fabric of communities.

During the two-day event 'Il verde nella città che cambia,' ten actionable proposals were presented to government and local administrations. These proposals aim to place nature at the heart of urban models, enhancing functionality, promoting sociability and health, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The 'Libro Bianco del Verde' serves as a comprehensive resource, compiling 73 contributions from 128 authors across various disciplines, offering scientific testimonies, administrative experiences, case studies, and operational solutions.

Massimiliano Giansanti, president of Confagricoltura, underscored the transition towards 'smart' and inclusive city models where green spaces play a leading role. The collaboration with the Crea is deemed essential for providing the scientific backbone to these initiatives, ensuring that urban green spaces are not only seen as economic assets but as vital components of a healthy and sustainable urban environment.

The discussions also shed light on the evolving management of urban green spaces, with a focus on the floriculture sector and the impact of climate change on city landscapes. The 'Libro Bianco del Verde' emerges as a key document in advocating for greener, more resilient cities, where the integration of agricultural activities within urban settings is seen as a noble task that combines economic production with the higher values of life, such as togetherness, aggregation, and participation in a healthy environment.
