New Italy-Greece Electrical Interconnection Aims to Boost Energy Security and Decarbonization

13-05-2025

In a significant move to enhance energy cooperation, Terna, Italy's national electricity transmission grid operator, and Greece's IPTO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a new electrical interconnection between the two countries. This agreement, finalized during the intergovernmental summit between Italy and Greece in Rome, outlines the key terms and conditions for the design and construction of this ambitious project.

The new direct current power line between Italy and Greece is set to become a cornerstone of the Mediterranean's energy infrastructure. By complementing existing and future network developments, this interconnection will play a pivotal role in achieving decarbonization goals and reinforcing both countries' positions as key electricity hubs in the region.

Giuseppina Di Foggia, CEO and General Manager of Terna, highlighted the project's benefits, stating, 'The new submarine electrical link between Italy and Greece will enhance the security of the entire southern region of the country and promote efficient energy supplies. It will enable new resources and maintain exchanges between the two states, ensuring greater efficiency in energy transmission services.'

Manos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO, emphasized the strategic importance of the interconnection for the European Union's climate objectives and the transition to a clean energy system. 'This new energy corridor between Greece and Italy will not only increase the capacity for electricity exchange but also strengthen energy security and improve the efficiency of the integrated European electricity market, delivering tangible benefits to consumers in both countries,' he said.
