Colonel Mettini, 48, was an experienced pilot with over 4,000 flight hours accumulated during his distinguished career. A native of Piombino who joined the Air Force in 1997 through the "Urano IV" course, he had served in multinational missions including operations in Libya and Iraq. Mettini had been commanding the 70th Wing for over a year, responsible for training future pilots at the military airport in Latina Scalo.
Lorenzo Nucheli, who would have turned 19 in coming days, had just begun his aviation career. The young cadet from Serrone had entered the Air Force Academy in August as part of the First Normal Course "Grifo VI" of the 70th Wing, pursuing his Pilot's License for Airplanes. Described by his hometown mayor as a sunny, generous young man with a deep sense of duty, Nucheli had previously volunteered with civil protection services.
Both men leave behind grieving families - Mettini is survived by his wife and two young children, while Nucheli is mourned by his parents, younger brother, and his entire community. The Italian Air Force expressed solidarity with the families, colleagues, and friends of both servicemen, noting that their memory would continue to fly high in the hearts of those who had the honor of knowing them.
