Luxury Watch Theft Epidemic Strikes Italian Business Figures

02-10-2025

Michele Criscitiello, the CEO of Sportitalia and president of Folgore Caratese, fell victim to a sophisticated robbery while driving his Porsche in the Milan metropolitan area. The incident occurred on Thursday morning as the prominent sports media executive was traveling from Sportitalia Village in Verano Brianza to the company's Milan studios. While stopped at a traffic light near the Pro Sesto stadium in Sesto San Giovanni, Criscitiello was targeted by thieves using a well-established criminal technique.

The robbery followed the classic "mirror trick" method frequently employed by criminal gangs specializing in luxury watch thefts from business executives and celebrities. A scooter carrying two men approached Criscitiello's vehicle, with one rider deliberately striking the side mirror to create a distraction. When the sports executive instinctively lowered his window to assess the damage, he found himself facing an armed assailant.

The second robber, brandishing a firearm, pointed the weapon at Criscitiello while his accomplice forcibly removed the valuable timepiece from the journalist's wrist. The entire operation was executed with precision speed, allowing the perpetrators to flee on their scooter before the victim could react. The stolen Rolex was valued at approximately €65,000-70,000 according to various reports of the incident.

This robbery marks the latest in a series of similar incidents targeting high-profile individuals in the Milan area. In mid-September, television host Stefano De Martino was victimized using the identical mirror technique while driving in the Bocconi district, resulting in the theft of his Patek Philippe watch. Carabinieri from the Radiomobile unit have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators, though Criscitiello had already departed for work by the time officers arrived at the scene.
