Italy's Strategic Shift: Edison's First Long-Term LNG Contract with U.S. Signals Reduced Dependence on Russian Gas

15-05-2025

Edison has announced the arrival of the first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to Italy, marking a significant milestone in the country's energy supply strategy. The shipment, delivered by the methane tanker Elisa Aquila, part of Edison's fleet, carried approximately 165,000 cubic meters of LNG from the Calcasieu Pass facility in Louisiana to the Piombino terminal. This event underscores Italy's efforts to diversify its energy sources and enhance its energy security amidst global geopolitical tensions.

The long-term contract with Venture Global, signed in 2017, enables Edison to withdraw 1.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from the Calcasieu Pass plant. This volume, equivalent to 1 million tons of LNG, is transported using two of Edison's methane tankers, each with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, totaling 14 shipments per year. Fabio Dubini, Executive Vice President Gas & Power Portfolio Management & Optimization at Edison, highlighted the strategic importance of this contract in diversifying the company's gas portfolio and reducing geopolitical risks associated with energy supply.

This development is part of a broader European initiative to reduce reliance on Russian gas following the geopolitical tensions that arose after the events in Ukraine in February 2022. By securing a stable and diversified energy supply, Edison is contributing to the resilience and competitiveness of Italy's national energy system. The successful unloading of the first U.S. LNG shipment at Piombino represents a tangible step towards achieving these strategic objectives.

The collaboration between Edison and Venture Global exemplifies the growing importance of transatlantic energy partnerships in ensuring energy security and stability. As Italy and other European nations continue to seek alternatives to Russian gas, the role of LNG, particularly from the United States, is expected to expand. This partnership not only strengthens Italy's energy infrastructure but also sets a precedent for other European countries looking to diversify their energy sources and reduce geopolitical vulnerabilities.
