Italy has launched a new humanitarian evacuation operation from Gaza, bringing 150 Palestinians to safety through coordinated medical and student transfers. The operation, organized by the Italian government, involves patients requiring urgent medical care along with students and family members seeking refuge from the ongoing conflict in the region.
The evacuation commenced with three C-130 military aircraft arriving at Italian airports on Monday evening. The flights landed at Ciampino, Galatina in Lecce, and Verona, carrying 16 patients accompanied by family members and caregivers, totaling approximately 80 people. Among the patients is a young girl named Tuleen, who suffers from a severe congenital malformation requiring specialized medical treatment unavailable in Gaza.
Additional arrivals are scheduled for Wednesday, with two flights operated by the Guardia di Finanza and Civil Protection departing from Amman, Jordan. These flights will transport 73 people, including 39 students and 34 individuals for family reunification, landing at Ciampino and Linate airports. The aircraft have been specially equipped with support from the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI), Civil Protection, and the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
This latest evacuation brings the total number of Gazan children and their families hosted in Italy to nearly 200 individuals, representing 657 people overall. Italy becomes the first Western country to conduct such extensive humanitarian operations for Gaza's civilian population. The initiative forms part of the broader 'Food for Gaza' project and demonstrates Italy's ongoing commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the conflict.
