Former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has been handed a 20-month suspended prison sentence after reaching a plea bargain agreement in a case involving false accounting at the Italian football club. The ruling, delivered by a court in Rome, concludes a legal process that began with investigations into Juventus's financial practices starting in 2021. Agnelli, along with other former club executives, faced charges related to accounting irregularities between 2019 and 2021.
In addition to Agnelli's sentence, former vice-president Pavel Nedved received a 14-month suspended sentence, while former sporting director Fabio Paratici was given an 18-month suspended punishment. Former CEO Maurizio Arrivabene was acquitted of all charges. All parties involved have denied any wrongdoing, with Agnelli emphasizing that the plea bargain does not constitute an admission of guilt but rather represents a pragmatic resolution to avoid prolonged legal proceedings.
Juventus itself was fined €156,000 and reached a settlement with approximately 75 investors, agreeing to pay them slightly more than €1 million. The club stated that while it maintains its conduct was correct and that it had strong arguments in its defense, the settlement was deemed appropriate in the best interest of the company, its shareholders, and all stakeholders. The financial scandal had already resulted in significant sporting consequences for the club, including a 10-point deduction during the 2022-23 Serie A season.
The legal resolution potentially opens the door for Agnelli's return to football activities when his current ban from sports expires next month. The case had previously led to the resignation of Agnelli and Juventus's entire board in 2022, followed by separate sporting bans imposed by Italian football authorities. The charges centered on allegations of artificial inflation of capital gains from player transfers, improper management of player salaries during the COVID-19 pandemic, and misleading investors through fictitious invoices that artificially boosted the club's reported revenue.
