Cecchettin Father Addresses UN on Gender Violence Amid Attacker's Prison Transfer

25-09-2025

The 55-year-old inmate who assaulted Filippo Turetta—the confessed murderer of Giulia Cecchettin—inside Montorio Veronese prison last August has been transferred to the Santa Bona detention facility in Treviso. The incident, which occurred within the Veronese penitentiary walls, resulted in minor bruises for Turetta, who is serving a sentence for Cecchettin's killing. Following the aggression, the assailant was placed in disciplinary isolation before being moved to another institution.

Meanwhile, thousands of kilometers away, Giulia's father, Gino Cecchettin, continues his cultural campaign to eliminate violence against women. He is currently in New York as a guest of the United Nations, specifically UN Women, the UN entity for gender equality and female empowerment established in 2010. Cecchettin has been appointed an ambassador for the "He for She" project, which aims to involve men in the necessary process of change to bridge the gender gap that disadvantages women in many sectors.

The attacker, identified as Cesare Dromì, has a criminal record including murder, attempted murder, robbery, and past contacts with Calabrian organized crime. His transfer to Treviso's prison was arranged swiftly after the violent episode to avoid further tensions. While the dynamics are unusual, authorities deemed it necessary to resolve the situation promptly.

In his UN address, Cecchettin spoke before an audience of seventy representatives from numerous countries worldwide about the work of his foundation and Giulia's legacy. He explained how men can help change the cultural substrate that allows violence to grow and take root, emphasizing the role of male involvement in achieving gender equality.
