Carabinieri Intercept Scam Artists Following Senior Citizen Robberies

28-09-2025

A couple from Campania has been arrested by Italian carabinieri for allegedly robbing and defrauding an elderly woman in Polistena through a sophisticated phone scam. The operation, which involved coordinated efforts between carabinieri and highway police, led to the recovery of stolen cash and jewelry from the victims.

The scheme began when an elderly Polistena resident received a phone call from a man posing as a lawyer who claimed her daughter had been arrested and required bail money. The caller instructed the woman to gather all the cash and jewelry in her home to secure her daughter's release. This method, known as the "fake lawyer" or "fake carabiniere" scam, preys on vulnerable elderly individuals by exploiting their fears and sense of urgency regarding family members.

Investigators determined the couple had attempted similar scams against other elderly women in the preceding days, including one resident of Cittanova who recognized the deception and alerted authorities. Surveillance cameras helped military police identify and track the suspects as they fled northbound on the highway in their vehicle. After sharing the car's make and license plate with highway patrol, the couple was intercepted and arrested near the Lamezia Terme highway exit.

During the arrest, authorities found the stolen cash and jewelry inside the vehicle. The preliminary investigations judge of Lamezia Terme, at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office, issued a precautionary custody order for the couple, who now face formal charges for robbery and fraud targeting elderly victims.
