Italian authorities in Rimini have arrested a Bangladeshi couple for allegedly forcing their daughter into an arranged marriage through physical abuse and drugging. The parents, aged 42 and 55, were placed under house arrest following an order issued by Judge Raffaele Deflorio, executed by carabinieri from Rimini's investigative unit.
The case involves their daughter, who came to Italy at age seven and recently turned 18. Last December, her parents allegedly deceived her into traveling to Bangladesh by claiming her grandmother was seriously ill. Once in Dhaka, relatives confiscated her documents and credit card, effectively trapping her in the country.
According to investigators, the young woman faced constant surveillance, threats, and physical mistreatment aimed at compelling her to marry a man ten years her senior. Despite her repeated refusals and existing romantic involvement with a 23-year-old Bangladeshi man living in Forlì, her family allegedly administered drugs to weaken her resistance, including fertility medications and sedatives.
The woman secretly managed to obtain contraceptive pills and eventually contacted a women's health counseling service and an anti-violence center volunteer through a friend. This led to communication with Italian carabinieri and prosecutors, resulting in the investigation and subsequent arrests of her parents on charges of family mistreatment and forced marriage induction.
