President Mattarella Calls for Enhanced Workplace Safety to Curb Fatalities

29-04-2025

In a poignant address during his visit to BSP Pharmaceuticals S.p.a. in Latina, Italian President Sergio Mattarella underscored the intolerable nature of indifference towards workplace fatalities. With hundreds of lives lost in the first few months of the year alone, Mattarella emphasized the urgent need for a collective effort to strengthen workplace safety measures. 'Neither indifference nor resignation is tolerable,' he stated, calling on institutions, businesses, and workers to unite in this critical endeavor.

Mattarella's remarks came ahead of the symbolic May 1st Labor Day celebrations, a time he described as an opportunity to reflect on work as a means of personal fulfillment and societal progress, rather than a source of tragedy. He praised the unified stance of labor unions Cgil, Cisl, and Uil in prioritizing workplace safety and health as this year's theme, highlighting the importance of dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders to drive civil, social, and economic progress.

The President also touched on broader economic challenges, warning against the potential negative impacts of widespread tariff impositions on global health access and the economy. He pointed out that such measures could disproportionately affect the world's poorest and most vulnerable populations, while also posing risks to Italy's economic stability.

Addressing the issue of insufficient wages, Mattarella linked fair compensation to the reduction of inequalities and the equitable distribution of the benefits brought by innovation and progress. He voiced concerns over the struggles of many families to cope with the rising cost of living, framing inadequate wages as a pressing issue for Italy. Through his speech, Mattarella called for a renewed commitment to social dialogue and institutional support to address these challenges, reinforcing the idea that work should always respect the dignity and uniqueness of every individual.
