Italian authorities have uncovered what they describe as the largest illegal cigarette factory ever discovered in Italy, located in a sophisticated underground bunker near Cassino, approximately two hours south of Rome. The clandestine operation was concealed beneath what appeared to be an empty logistics warehouse, with police discovering the facility through hidden hydraulic mechanisms that perfectly concealed the entrance to the 1,600-square-meter underground complex.
The factory represented a highly sophisticated illegal operation, equipped with three tobacco processing and counterfeit cigarette packaging lines capable of producing approximately 7 million cigarettes daily, or around 5,000 cigarettes per minute. The facility featured advanced technological standards, including a ventilation system designed to prevent emissions from the production process from escaping, indicating the operation's careful planning to avoid detection.
Authorities estimate the factory contained approximately 300 million cigarettes destined for distribution both within Italy and throughout the European Union. The underground complex included not only production facilities but also makeshift living quarters capable of accommodating 18 workers, complete with sleeping areas, bathrooms, showers, and a dining room. The operation also maintained an on-site workshop for machine repairs, suggesting the facility was designed for continuous, long-term operation.
The financial impact of the illegal operation is substantial, with police estimating tax evasion exceeding half a billion euros. Authorities have made one arrest and seized assets valued at more than 50 million euros, while additional criminal complaints have been filed against several suspects. The discovery represents a significant blow to Europe's illicit tobacco trade, highlighting the sophisticated methods employed by criminal organizations to evade taxation and regulatory oversight.
