Marcell Jacobs Reflects on Alleged Spying Scandal and Family Reconciliation in Candid Interview

2025-04-29T11:59:31.850Z

Olympic champion and European record holder Marcell Jacobs shared intimate details of his life and career in a candid interview on Rai2's 'Belve', hosted by Francesca Fagnani. The sprinter, who took gold in the 100 meters at Tokyo 2020, discussed the alleged spying scandal involving Giacomo Tortu, brother and manager of fellow athlete Filippo Tortu. Jacobs expressed his shock and dismay over the invasion of his privacy, stating, 'I was quite upset. It's news that shook me a bit because I would never have expected it.'

The investigation by Milan's prosecutor's office into illegal access to state databases has brought to light claims that Giacomo Tortu paid a detective agency to spy on Jacobs, accessing his blood tests, certificates, and even his phone. When asked about the motives behind such actions, Jacobs speculated, 'At the time I won the Olympics, I, in quotes, overshadowed a bit the path that Filippo had taken since 2018. They thought maybe I was using doping... The fact that they violated my privacy was what really bothered me the most.'

Jacobs also touched on his complex relationship with his father, Lamont, who left when he was just a baby. The athlete revealed how reconnecting with his father before the Olympics marked a turning point in his life and career. 'Before the Olympics, I started to break down that wall I had built to find a relationship with my father. It's from there that the Marcell Jacobs who started winning was born,' he shared.

Despite the challenges, both personal and professional, Jacobs remains focused on his future in athletics. The interview shed light on the resilience and determination of one of Italy's most celebrated athletes, offering fans a glimpse into the man behind the medals. As the investigation into the spying allegations continues, Jacobs emphasized the importance of privacy and trust, both on and off the track.
