Legacy in Limbo: Delays and Deviations in Vita Carrapa's Bequest

19-05-2025

The case of Vita Carrapa's bequest has sparked controversy in the Basso Salento area, where the late benefactor's wish to fund a healthcare facility has seemingly been diverted towards the construction of a rehabilitation gym. Carrapa, who passed away at the age of 95 in February 2019, had left a clear directive in her will: her estate was to be used for the creation of a healthcare infrastructure aimed at improving medical services in one of Lecce province's most underserved regions.

At the time of drafting her will in 2009, there was no concrete plan for a new hospital in the area. This led Carrapa to opt for a broader formulation, specifying that the funds should go towards a 'healthcare structure for treatment and assistance'. However, she set a critical condition: if the project was not realized within five years of the will's opening on September 11, 2019, the money was to be transferred to Ispe, the entity managing Maglie's retirement home, to enhance services for the elderly or build a new residence.

Nearly six years on, the reality diverges sharply from Carrapa's vision. The donated funds have been allocated to a high-tech rehabilitation gym located in the former Maglie hospital, now repurposed as a Territorial Assistance Presidium (Pta). While the local health authority (Asl) describes this as a 'District Rehabilitation Presidium', the committee representing Carrapa's interests argues that this does not align with the scope or intent of her original bequest.

Compounding the issue are significant delays in the project's completion. The Asl had set May 9, 2025, as the delivery date, but progress has been sluggish, with reports of inactive construction sites and a lack of official updates. This has raised concerns about the timely fulfillment of Carrapa's conditions, further complicating the legacy she intended to leave for her community.
