Italian Farmers Protest Against Grain Speculation and Import Practices

25-09-2025

Thousands of Italian farmers affiliated with Coldiretti are preparing for nationwide demonstrations on Friday, September 26, to protest what they describe as speculative practices that are driving down domestic grain prices. The organization, representing what it calls "the people of wheat," claims that imported foreign products are being used by what they term "traffickers" to collapse Italian grain prices below production costs.

The protests will span from north to south across Italy, with major demonstrations planned in symbolic cities of national cereal production. Bari, considered the capital of Italy's grain production in Puglia, and Palermo in Sicily will serve as focal points, while additional presences are scheduled for Florence, Cagliari, and Rovigo. Farmers from across the country will participate peacefully with signs, flags, and banners.

According to Coldiretti, the survival of over 130,000 agricultural enterprises engaged in grain cultivation is at stake. The organization warns that the current market situation risks drastically reducing the country's productive capacity in a sector considered strategic for food supply. The protests highlight concerns about both economic and environmental consequences if domestic production continues to decline.

The mobilization also addresses broader territorial concerns, with Coldiretti noting that approximately 1.2 million hectares of land face threats of abandonment and desertification. Specific regional demonstrations, such as the Florence protest scheduled for 10:30 AM, will see participation from farmers across Tuscany and neighboring Lazio regions, gathering outside the Prefecture building to voice their concerns about the future of Italian agriculture.
