From Gaza to Milan: A Journey of Healing for Palestinian Children Amidst Conflict

12-06-2025

In a heartrending tale of loss and hope, 11-year-old Adam al-Najjar, the sole survivor of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza that claimed the lives of his father and nine siblings, has arrived in Italy for medical treatment. The young boy, accompanied by his mother, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, a pediatrician who was on duty at Gaza's Nasser Hospital during the attack, is among 17 Palestinians receiving care in Italy under a humanitarian initiative by the Italian government.

Adam's injuries, including multiple fractures and nerve damage in his left arm, will be treated at Milan's Niguarda Hospital. The emotional scars, however, run deeper, with his mother and a team of psychologists tasked with providing the necessary support to help him cope with the unimaginable loss of his family. The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, personally welcomed Adam and his mother upon their arrival, presenting the boy with a football—a small gesture of kindness towards a child who has endured so much.

This humanitarian effort is part of a broader initiative by Italy to provide medical evacuation and care for Palestinians from Gaza. To date, 133 children have been treated in Italian healthcare facilities, a program made possible through the collaboration of various government departments, including the Ministry of Defense. The initiative underscores Italy's commitment to humanitarian aid, even as conflicts continue to displace and injure civilians in regions around the world.

The story of Adam al-Najjar is a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict. As he begins his journey of physical and emotional recovery in Milan, the international community is reminded of the ongoing need for peace and compassion in regions torn by war. The Italian government's role in facilitating Adam's treatment highlights the potential for nations to make a difference in the lives of individuals affected by violence, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation.
