Chamila Wijesuriya's Tragic End: A Case of Fatal Obsession

20-05-2025

The death of Chamila Wijesuriya, a 50-year-old bartender at the Hotel Berna in Milan, has taken a dark turn with the emergence of ritualistic elements in the case. Emanuele De Maria, a convict on external work assignment at the same hotel, is accused of strangling Wijesuriya to death with his bare hands. Autopsy results suggest that the fatal wounds were not the knife cuts found on her throat and wrists, which were likely inflicted post-mortem, but rather the act of suffocation. The presence of leaves in the victim's mouth has prompted investigators to explore the possibility of a ritualistic aspect to the crime.

De Maria, who subsequently took his own life by jumping from the terraces of the Duomo, had a history of violence, having committed a similar femicide in 2016. Authorities are now examining the details of that previous crime for any parallels that might shed light on the current investigation. Toxicology reports are pending to determine whether De Maria was under the influence of drugs at the time of the murder.

Colleagues of Wijesuriya have revealed that she had been living in fear of De Maria, who was described as possessive and obsessive. He allegedly threatened her on multiple occasions, demanded money, and hinted at releasing intimate videos. The bartender had confided in a coworker about her fears, stating that De Maria's behavior had become increasingly morbid and jealous, culminating in public outbursts at the hotel.

The investigation, led by prosecutor Francesco De Tommasi, is also scrutinizing potential oversights in De Maria's prison treatment and work release program. Questions are being raised about whether adequate warnings were missed or ignored, which could have prevented this tragedy. As the case unfolds, the focus remains on piecing together the events that led to Wijesuriya's untimely death and ensuring accountability for any systemic failures.
