Central Florence Incident: Ex-Mayor Injured, Attacker Released Quickly

26-09-2025

An evening in Florence's historic center turned violent when former Impruneta mayor Alessio Calamandrei was assaulted on Via Martelli. The incident occurred on the night of September 24th when Calamandrei witnessed a 32-year-old Italian man throwing a beer bottle at the door of the San Giovannino dei Padri Scolopi church and overturning two trash bins while shouting insults. Calamandrei, who currently resides in Florence's historic center, called emergency services and began following the individual while describing the situation to operators.

The situation escalated when the man noticed he was being observed and confronted Calamandrei. According to the former mayor's account, the individual insulted him and then struck him with a chair, hitting his back and arm. Calamandrei remained on the phone with emergency services throughout the altercation. Two police patrol vehicles responded to the scene shortly after the incident was reported.

Despite his injuries, Calamandrei walked himself to Santa Maria Nuova hospital for treatment rather than taking an ambulance. Medical staff diagnosed him with an elbow injury requiring a seven-day recovery period. The former mayor expressed frustration with the healthcare wait times but emphasized that ambulances should be reserved for more serious cases.

The quick release of the alleged attacker has raised questions about public safety procedures. Calamandrei noted that within an hour of the arrest, the individual was back on Via Martelli while he remained hospitalized. Political figures from Fratelli d'Italia have commented on the incident, suggesting it demonstrates ongoing security issues in Florence. The case has drawn attention to urban safety concerns in the historic city center.
